Heute wollen wir an den umfangreichen Hitkatalog von Jimmy Cliff erinnern. Am 24.11.2025 ist Jimmy Cliff, einer der ersten Wegbereiter des Reggae, leider nach einer Lungenentzündung verstorben. Mit großer Bestürzung haben wir erfahren, dass unser Freund Owen Lennox Moncrieffe, a.k.a. Fantan Mojah am 14.07.2026 im University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, nur wenige Tage vor seinem 50. Geburtstag verstorben ist. Nachdem er uns schon voriges Jahr mit starken gesundheitlichen Problemen erschrocken hatte und nicht zu einem Wiedersehen nach Deutschland kommen konnte, sollte es dieses Jahr endlich wieder soweit sein. Leider ist er nun an seinen Herzkomplikationen verstorben, die sich schon seit einiger Zeit angekündigt hatten.Fantan Mojah war ein sehr wichtiger Teil der Roots-Reggae-Szene und brillierte stets mit seinen energiegeladenen Bühnenshows. Seine Musik wird ewig in unserer Erinnerung weiterleben. Wir sind sehr dankbar dafür, dass wir ihn viele Male von Anbeginn seiner Karriere, live erleben und persönlich treffen konnten. Unser tief empfundenes Mitgefühl gilt seiner Familie und seinem engen Freundeskreis. Lebe wohl lieber Freund. Irgendwann sehen wir uns wieder.

Wir trauern um eine Legende des Ska, Rocksteady und Early Reggae. Wir sind erschüttert,
nachdem wir erst voller Hoffnung waren, dass Wilburn Theodore Cole, a.k.a. Stranger Cole,
wieder auf die Beine kommt. Unser Mitgefühl ist bei seiner Familie! Wir sind dankbar dafür,
dass wir ihn viele Male haben sehen und treffen können. Seine Musik wird ewig leben.
Wilburn starb am 11.06.2026. R.I.P. lieber Wilburn!

Let's see now – you just love that hugely fertile foundation period of Jamaican pop music from the birth of ska, through the spectacularly brief two year heyday of rocksteady up to and including the arrival of the first incarnation of reggae a.k.a. early or 'boss' reggae. But you're also aware that the pioneers of these sounds (including The Pioneers!) won't be creating music in these styles or touring forever – so what do you do? Well, if you're Neil Anderson, owner of Original Gravity Records, the creation bit isn't a problem.

You put forth period-authentic style material from a 'roster' of acts – such as Junior Dell & The D-Lites - that in reality consist mostly of yourself (you are a multi-instrumentalist and lyricist after all!) and whichever extra musicians and session singer you rope in for a given track. In the case of Junior Dell & The D-Lites that singer was Adrian Dell – soon to be dubbed (no pun intended) 'Junior' - first appearing on 2021's uptempo ska tribute to Salvadoran retro-dancing internet sensation Aranivah, entitled Miss Aranivah. And you keep putting out stuff so profusely and effectively that there are clamours for you to tour 'the band' which - er - doesn't really exist. What a botheration! Still, maybe your session singer could become – well - a permanent singer? Maybe you can rustle up assorted bredren to become the rest of the band and ... you know what? That might just work! And so, in the blink of an eye, Junior Dell & The D-Lites becomes a bona fide actual live band fronted by a young Jamaican singer playing fresh 60s/70s-style Jamaican music with an energy last seen and heard in, well, the 1960s and 70s. And it tours so effectively that there are clamours for 'the band' – or more accurately, now – the band - to release an album. Wait ... what now? And, by the way, you've got a European tour coming up in April wouldn't it be great if the album was ready to tour by then? Pressure drop? Pressure rise more like! Then again, Junior Dell & The D-Lites have done so many sure-shot singles to date that assembling them along with a new cut, an extended version of one of the singles and re-recordings of two of the label's previous singles that were originally by 'label mates' The Regulators should be a cinch. So expect all the hits: bluebeat banger 20 Flight Ska, the euphoric ska bounce of the aforementioned Miss Aranivah and the title track, a de rigueur smattering of covers (opener Jump Around, midway markers Praise You and Just Can't Get Enough, and one of the re-recordings, closer Don't Look Back In Anger), early reggae groovers Cool Right Down, Last Night Reggay, Can't Stop The Reggae (in a new extended form) and crowd-pleasing new one Mi Try along with the other Junior Dell re-recording - the gorgeous Why Why Why which nods to the period of reggae between the sound of '69 and the arrival of roots. Nachdem die Hanfkaiserin schon am 27. Februar zusammen mit Tiken Jah Fakoly, die von Paolo Baldini Dubfiles produzierte Single "Rastaman A Chant" veröffentlichte, folgt nun endlich ihr neues Album "Woman", ebenfalls von Paolo Baldini Dubfiles produziert. Nachdem bereits in 2021 Robert "Robbie" Shakespeare des weltweit und nicht nur
im Reggae bekannten Drum & Bass Duos Sly & Robbie, verstorben war, ist nun auch
Drummer Lowell "Sly" Dunbar nach langer schwerer Krankheit von uns gegangen.
Er trat seine letzte Reise am 26. Januar 2026 im Alter von 73 Jahren an.
Sein ganz besonderer Sound an den Drums wird ewig in unseren Ohren weiterleben.
Er ist auf mehr als 200.000 Aufnahmen zu hören. Er hat mit weltbekannten Künstlern
wie Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Grace Jones, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Sinéad O'Connor,
Black Uhuru, den Fugees und zahllosen anderen zusammengearbeitet.
Seine Spuren, die er im weltweiten Musikgeschehen hinterlassen hat, sind unübersehbar.

Wir trauern um einen ganz besonderen Musiker. Das Jahr fängt gar nicht gut an.
Stephen "Cat" Coore, ehemaliges Mitglied von Inner Circle und Mitgründer von Third World,
ist gestern im Alter von 69 Jahren leider verstorben.
Erinnern wir uns an seine ganz besonders beliebten Cello Einlagen.

Auch für das nächste Jahr gibt es, wie alle Jahre wieder, den weltweit beliebten Afrocalendar der Deutsch Äthiopischen Stiftung mit Sitz in Hamburg. Wir hatten den Kalender schon mehrfach beworben und über die Stiftung berichtet. Der Kalender konzentriert sich auf Äthiopien und Eritrea und zeigt auf einem Blick die in der Region stattfindenden Festivals, Fastenzeiten und Feiertage. Jedes Jahr gibt es noch mehr oder neue Informationen über die einzigartige Kultur dieser Region.

Ehrenamtliche Mitstreiter und Fotografen aus aller Welt bemühen sich jedes Jahr für jeden Monat bemerkenswerte Fotos und interessante Informationen in mehreren Sprachen auf der Rückseite der Kalenderblätter zusammenzustellen. Mit dabei die drei wichtigsten regionalen Sprachen wie Amharisch, Oromo und Tigrinya, sowie Englisch, Französisch, Deutsch und Italienisch. Für 2026 ist auch reggaestory.de mit 4 Monatsblättern dabei, dessen Motive sich die Stiftung aus den Reiseberichten dieser Website ausgewählt hat. 05.12.2025 - ... THEY CALL IT SKA - EP RELEASE

Bluekilla zählen seit nun genau 40 Jahren neben Bands wie The Busters zur Speerspitze der deutschen aber auch europäischen Ska-Szene, was Tourneen und Festival-Slots in Ländern wie England, Wales, Schottland, Polen, Ungarn, Tschechien, Frankreich, Serbien, Niederlande, Italien, Schweiz, Österreich u.a. nachhaltig unterstreichen. Zudem spielten sie diverse Support-Shows und/oder Co-Headliner-Konzerte mit The Wailers, Burning Spear, Leningrad Cowboys sowie natürlich etlichen Ska-Legenden wie Judge Dread, The Specials, The Selecter, Bad Manners oder auch Altmeister Laurel Aitken.

Zu ihrem Jubiläum nun präsentieren Bluekilla ihre neue 10“ Vinyl „... they call it SKA“. „Von Innen wie von Außen: Frühe 80er“ beschreibt Frontmann Amedeo Tortora alias Dr. Deadlock die Scheibe. Und weiter: „Anfang der 80er waren wir Punks, die auch Reggae gehört haben - und damit war die Richtung klar vorgegeben: Punk meets Reggae, und das Ganze gegen Rassismus: SKA !“ Das Artwork zitiert bewusst den Fanzine-Style der Punk-Ära und auch musikalisch verneigt sich die Band vor ihren Wurzeln: Auf der A-Seite liefert „Pogo in Togo“ von der legendären Münchner NDW-Band „United Balls“ auf Platte dieselbe ungebremste Energie wie live. „Staring At The Rude Boys“ - im Original von der UK-Punk Band „The Ruts“ - featured ein Toasting von dem großartigen Dr. Ring Ding und bringt mit dem Mix aus Ska, Punk und Dancehall-Style den Tune auf maximalen Hörgenuss. Auf der B-Seite zeigt sich Bluekilla erneut gewohnt souverän: Mit „The Big Red Kangaroo“ und „Nutz die Chancen“ feiern sie klassischen Ska, während „Zeit unseres Lebens “ NDW- Anleihen mit Offbeat verbindet. In „Boys and Girls“ blitzen verspielte Synthiepop-Elemente auf, bevor der Barrington-Levy-Klassiker „Here I Come“ die EP würdig beschließt. Am 26. und 27.12.2025 spielen Bluekilla zwei Release- und Jubiläumsshows in der Münchner Milla. Am Montag dem 24.11.2025, wurde auf Jimmy Cliff's Instagram Profil folgende traurige
Nachricht verkündet:
"It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over
due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists
and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world,
please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career.
He really appreciated each and every fan for their love. "Jimmy, my darling, may you rest
in peace. I will follow your wishes. ..."
„Mit tiefer Trauer teile ich mit, dass mein Mann, Jimmy Cliff, nach einem Krampfanfall mit
anschließender Lungenentzündung verstorben ist. Ich bin seiner Familie, seinen Freunden,
Künstlerkollegen und Mitarbeitern, die ihn auf seinem Lebensweg begleitet haben,
unendlich dankbar. Allen seinen Fans weltweit möchte ich sagen, dass eure Unterstützung
ihm während seiner gesamten Karriere Kraft gegeben hat. Er hat jeden einzelnen Fan
für seine Liebe sehr geschätzt. Jimmy, mein Liebling, ruhe in Frieden. Ich werde deinen

Jimmy Cliff, bürgerlich James Chambers, wurde am 30.07.1944, in Somerton, im Parish
St. James, auf Jamaika geboren. Jimmy Cliff war einer der Wegbereiter des Reggae und
gelangte noch vor Bob Marley zu Weltruhm mit seiner Musik. Unvergessen bleibt seine
erste Schauspielrolle im Kultfilm "The Harder They Come". Neben diesem Titelsong
schrieb er auch den Großteil der übrigen Filmmusik.
Mit Songs wie "Hanging Fire", "I Can See Clearly Now", "Rub A Dub Partner", "Sufferin'
In The Land", "Treat The Youths Right", "Vietnam", "You Can Get It If You Really Want"
und vielen anderen, hat er sich ein Denkmal gesetzt und wird in unseren Herzen
weiterleben.

Vom Berliner Publikum seinerzeit mal zur "Besten Live-Band Berlins" gewählt, ist jetzt endlich ihre energiegeladene, schweißtreibende Bühnenshow aktuell und neu, live auf Tonträger gebannt! Eine perfekte Uptempo-Ska-Power-Platte die beweist: Blechreiz sind einfach Meister ihres Fachs! Die Songs wurden im SO36 Berlin und in Greiz live mitgeschnitten. Als uns Tad's Record diese Neuveröffentlichung zuschickte, kamen uns die Songs reichlich bekannt vor. Und tatsächlich fanden wir in unserem Archiv den "Reggae Virus - First Dose" vom 26. Juni 2021. Frühstücksshow am Samstag war in den zurückliegenden Jahren ja immer eine Herausforderung an die Fans von Ganjaman und seinem kleinen Picknick. Dieses Jahr sollen nun erst ab 15:00 Uhr die Tabletts herumgereicht werden. Eine angenehme Zeit, die nun wirklich niemand mehr verpassen wird, auch wenn er bis 5:00 Uhr in der Früh im Sound Wonderland abgefeiert haben sollte. 01.08.2025 - THE GENESIS - ALBUM RELEASE

Am 01.08.2025 veröffentlicht Rik Jam sein bewundernswertes Debutalbum bei Irie Yute Tapes in Kingston, Jamaica. Ein Tag später ist dieser Künstler zusammen mit Dalwayne, der auf Track 11 mit "Troubled Streets" zu hören ist, beim Reggae Jam in Bersenbrück zu Gast. Weitere Mitwirkende auf dem Album sind Taye Louise, Eric Rachmany und MediSun. Das mit 14 Tracks ausgestattete Projekt wurde von Phillip McFarlane produziert. Dieses Album ist eine Widerspiegelung von Rik Jams Leben, begonnen beim Verlust seiner Mutter in jungen Jahren bis zum Beginn seiner musikalischen Reise.

31 Jahre Reggae Jam und reggaestory.de ist natürlich wieder dabei. Seit Jahren ist das Reggae Jam eine feste Größe im Kalender und unser Reggae-Highlight des Jahres. Auch die Leser des Riddim Magazins sind nach wie vor dieser Meinung und wählten das Reggae Jam wiederum zum "Best Festival" für 2024. Damit gelang es den 16. Titel in Folge nach Bersenbrück zu holen. Eine nahezu unglaubliche Serie, wenn man bedenkt, dass das zweitplatzierte Summerjam ein deutlich größeres Publikum hat. Das Reggae Jam hat eben auch das beste Publikum. >>> Mehr dazu

"Joker Riddim" is the first release from the new Italian label Stillworking Production. The voices of Jamaican icons Luciano and Mickey General alternate with those of various Italian singers over a one drop reggae riddim. With executive production by Joker Sound, the riddim also features vocals from Mistilla, Fido Guido, Quartiere Coffee, Jaka & Hi Kee, Raphael, Papa Massi, Mark-One, G.Man, and Jamaican artists Slase Mashan and Star Social.

Stillworking Production was founded by two veterans of the Italian reggae scene, Chisco and Reverbero, formerly the singer and keyboardist of the group Working Vibes. "Revelation" ist das neue Album der Schweizer Band Breakfast Mood. Es enthält vier Roots Reggae und Liebeslieder und die dazugehörigen Dub-Versionen, deren Texte die spirituelle Seite der Band hervorheben. Das Album erscheint bei One Camp Records, dem Label des Schweizer Sängers und Produzenten Elijah Salomon. Die Zusammenarbeit von Breakfast Mood mit Salomon begann 2022, als sie eine Challenge gewannen, bei der sie eine Version von Elijahs Song "Sie Isch Wäg" präsentieren mussten.

Der Preis war eine Session im One Camp Studio, wo sie "Revelation" in einer einzigen Live-Session mit Schlagzeug, Bass, Keyboard, Gitarre, Bläsern und Gesang aufnahmen. Mix und Mastering übernahm Joël Bollier, der auch die Dub-Versionen erstellte. Dem Album wurde die 12-Zoll-Vinyl-Veröffentlichung "Will He Show His Face" vorweggenommen. Venice Beach Dub Club (VBDC) presents their most ambitious and sonically expansive project to date, "VBDC II: Time Marches On". The Californian band’s second full-length album builds on their reputation for soulful storytelling, blending reggae roots with bold experimentation across genres including punk, blues, country, and even electronic music. Led by singer and songwriter Seth Caro, VBDC embarks on a new creative era with this album.

Caro, known for his emotional and philosophical lyrics, has spent the last three years carefully crafting each track alongside long-time collaborators Gary Big G Larason (lead guitar and producer) and Benji Hamlin (bass). In 2025 wurde an der schönen Wasserburg zu Rosslau das inzwischen 28. This Is Ska Festival gefeiert. Damit nähert sich dieses einzigartige Event unaufhaltsam seinem 30. Jubiläum, was man im Jahr 2027 begehen wird. Für das diesjährige Line-up hatte man sich besonders angestrengt und beim Vorverkauf der Tickets ging es dieses Mal mit Countdown in Richtung Ausverkauf, der dann auch tatsächlich eintrat. Herzlichen Glückwusch an die Festivalmacher! So viel Erfolg wünscht man jedem Veranstalter. Wenn das kein Lichtblick ist, denn bei anderen Events, besonders im Reggae, sind die Besucherzahlen öfters rückläufig. Beim Ska, Rocksteady und Early Reggae, scheint die Welt noch in Ordnung zu sein. Mit unserem Veranstaltungstitel "Jamaican Style" wollten wir uns dieses Mal nicht nur auf Reggae beschränken und mehr Ska und Rocksteady in das Programm einfließen lassen, und so einen erneuten Versuch starten, in die Reggae-Einöde von Ortrand und Umgebung etwas mehr Interesse an dieser Musik zu wecken, die in Jamaika ihren Ursprung hatte. Schon knapp 1 Jahr vorher hatten wir die erste Band gebucht, die aber ihre Bookings leider nicht richtig im Blick hatte und später wieder ausgetauscht werden musste. Die nächste Überraschung ereilte uns eine Woche vor dem Event, als die gebuchte Empty Pint bekanntgeben ließ, dass sie wegen einem anderen Termin nicht kommen könne. >>> Mehr dazu

The second album by the Italian reggae band De Strangers, released by La Tempesta Dub, is a project that explores the many shades of reggae and dub, while also delving into deeper emotions and reflections through meticulous writing and production. "Timeless Bond", born from the intense collaboration between the Italian group, artist Galas, and dubmaster Buriman, is a timeless sonic journey. An album that celebrates the synergy among three artists and their shared vision of uniting forces to create music that transcends borders, stirs emotions, and speaks to listeners with a message that knows neither time nor place.

According to Elia Pozzi (vocals, drums) and Emiliano Vegro (keyboards), the band’s main goal in creating "Timeless Bond" was clear: “We wanted to create an album that wasn’t just a tribute to reggae culture, but a full musical experience, capable of immersing the listener in the genre’s various facets, from classic to more modern and experimental sounds. The band played with rhythms and harmonies, offering a rich and complex overview of reggae’s diverse nuances, all held together by the unifying presence of Galas. His voice and lyrical style, blending reflections on the present, echoes of the past, and a strong critique of power structures, give the project a cohesive and deeply narrative dimension.” The entire album, which also features arrangements by Nicolas Biscione (guitar) and Alessandro Luppi (saxophone), was recorded and mixed at Studio La Sabbia, the De Strangers’ headquarters in Milan. Tracks like Sweet Memories and "Lift Up Your Head" offer moments of introspection, rooted in themes of awareness and contemplation of the modern world. Meanwhile, songs such as What’s Wrong, while maintaining strong social critique, explore more digital sounds with synth basslines and a stepper reggae rhythm. Another standout feature of "Timeless Bond" is the collaboration with Jules I, bassist of the internationally acclaimed reggae band Mellow Mood. On the track "Tea Bubbling", he adds his personal touch. The song presents itself as a roots-infused stepper, with lyrics by both singers that play on the meeting of their voices, trading lines and alternating in the choruses. To complete the project, De Strangers enlisted Buriman, a renowned dubmaster in the international reggae scene, to bring the album to its final form—true to reggae-dub culture. His meticulous and precise production approach transformed the work, creating a perfect balance between the band’s original reggae music and his distinctive dub interpretation. Each of the five vocal tracks is paired with a dub version, offering a dual listening experience. "Timeless Bond" is more than just a music project, it’s a meeting of artistic and personal visions, united by the desire to create something lasting and meaningful. Die Veröffentlichung von Tiken Jah Fakoly's neuem Album "Live Salle Pleyel" am 14.02.2025, weckte bei uns die Hoffnung, dass Tiken Jah Fakoly nach zirka 2 Jahren Deutschlandabstinenz wieder hier im Lande aufschlagen könnte. Unsere Anfrage zum Zeitpunkt der Albumbewerbung beim Management, ob es schon entsprechende Tourpläne für 2025 gibt, führte aber zu keinem Ergebnis. Aber dann gab es relativ still eine Bekanntmachung über das Haus der Kulturen der Welt von Berlin, dass Tiken Jah Fakoly im Rahmen des Festivals "Deberlinisierung" im Miriam Makeba Auditorium auftreten soll. Dennoch waren keinerlei Poster oder Flyer im Internet zu finden, die diese Show bewarben. >>> Mehr dazu

Am 25. April gibt's bei Smith & Miller Records für alle Freunde von Vinyl einen Leckerbissen mit Ska, Rocksteady und Early Reggae. Auf den Tag genau einen Monat nach der erschütternden Meldung zu Cocoa Tea's Tod
trifft nun der nächste Schock das Reggae Universum.
Maxwell Livingston Smith, alias Max Romeo, befand sich zur Behandlung einer
Herzerkrankung in einem Kingstoner Krankenhaus. Eigentlich war alles gut verlaufen und
es wurde bereits über seine Entlassung gesprochen. Doch am Freitag den 11. April starb
er plötzlich an Herzversagen. Damit verlässt uns eine weitere Reggae-Legende der ersten
Stunde. Unser tiefes Mitgefühl gehört seiner Familie. Mit seiner Musik wird er ewig leben.

Mellow Mood's seventh album, "7", which combines the Garzia twins' own writing with a more vintage and authentic aesthetic, marks a turning point in the musical evolution of the Italian band. Consisting of 11 tracks, the album is the result of a research that includes both experimentation and simplicity of arrangement. For the first time in their career, the band took control of the artistic production of this project, with the aim of finding a new sonic identity.

This novelty is also reflected in the approach to mixing: while continuing to rely on the experience of their long-time partner Paolo Baldini, Mellow Mood have opted for a drier, more minimalist style that leaves space for the songs and enhances their composition. The deliberately sparse arrangements enhance every detail, resulting in a warm, analogue sound that evokes retro atmospheres while remaining modern and fresh. The recordings took place in different studios in the cities where the band members come from (Pordenone, Terracina, Trieste, Udine), but each musician also contributed from his home studio. This way of working, alternating between writing and recording together and working at a distance, is a testimony to the shared commitment and passion that has distinguished the band for over twenty years. The project is further enriched by the presence of international guests: "Pull Up" features Jamaican star Romain Virgo, while "Home or Abroad" sees the collaboration of Anthony B and Dub Inc. American Mike Love joins Mellow Mood on "Heavy Load". These artistic choices not only broaden Mellow Mood's musical horizons, but also underline the band's ability to engage in a dialogue with the excellence of the world reggae scene. The title of the album, "7", was deliberately chosen in numerical form to symbolise the seventh chapter of their career and to ensure universal recognition, allowing the international audience to read and pronounce it without language barriers. In addition, the number 7 has a profound symbolic value, representing harmony and balance between the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual, and reflecting an evolutionary and transformative path that reflects the band's artistic renewal. The cover of "7", designed by Andrea Sifuentes, immediately catches the eye with its simplicity and skilful use of iconic shapes and colours. Essential yet striking, the design evokes vintage atmospheres and a 70s aesthetic, with warm colours and sinuous lines that create a sense of movement and harmony. The minimalist design enhances colour contrasts, emphasising the album's title and concept without distraction. The album's making-of, directed by videomaker Andrea Somensi, offers an intimate behind-the- scenes look at the work, with backstage footage that enriches the listening experience. Reichlich ein Jahr, fast auf die Woche genau, ist es her, als Laurent "Tippy I" Alfred mit seiner Live Dub Session in Berlin für Begeisterung sorgte. Damals noch in der relativ kleinen aber schmucken Location Badehaus, zusammen mit Samory I und Mortimer. Dieses Mal kehrte er mit Protoje zurück und eine größere Location war gefragt. Man hat sich für das MAAYA entschieden, welches in unwesentlicher Entfernung des Badehauses liegt. Allerdings ist dort reichlich mehr Raum, um die bei Protoje zu erwartende Fangemeinde unterzubringen. Auch für uns war dieser Termin eine Pflichtveranstaltung, da wir Protoje sage und schreibe vor 11 Jahren zuletzt vor der Linse hatten. Damals noch im Berliner YAAM. >>> Mehr dazu

Die Seychellen sind eine Ansammlung von 115 Granit- und Koralleninseln, verstreut über eine gigantische Meeresfläche von 390.000 Quadratkilometern. Entgegen dem landläufigen Image ist der farbenprächtige Archipel kein unbewohntes Paradies, sondern ein Staat mit knapp 100.000 Einwohnern und einer ebenso viel-farbigen Kultur. Seine Bewohner nennen sich Seychellois und ihre Kultur "Kreol". Ihr Soundtrack ist der unverwechselbare Reggae Kreol, untermalt vom allgegenwärtigen Meeresrauschen. "As It Is" is Ilements' new album, a work that blends introspection and spirituality with a vibrant celebration of life. His conscious lyrics are set to productions that fuse roots reggae with rub-a-dub, creating a sound that pays tribute to the artist's Caribbean roots. TABOU1 is proud to present "Roots Natty", a treasure trove of rare tracks by one of Reggae's most iconic groups, The Gladiators. These magnificent songs were recorded with the cream of Jamaica's musicians during Reggae's golden era, from 1977 to 1979, when the genre was shaping global music culture. During this period, alongside other Reggae giants like Culture and Burning Spear, The Gladiators crafted unforgettable arrangements and harmonies to match their deep, thoughtful compositions.

With Albert Griffiths (rhythm guitar, lead vocals + harmonies), Clinton Fearon (bass, lead vocals + harmonies) and Gallimore Sutherland (guitar, harmonies) at the helm, the trio transported listeners to a mystical land where peace and love reigned, Rastafari thrived, and the chaos of Babylon was left far behind. Most of the 11 tracks in "Roots Natty" are rare Jamaican singles previously unavailable on LP or digital files. Originally released in small batches in Jamaica, these singles, most of whom were mixed by the legendary Errol T, sound harder, heavier and more dub-infused than versions available in the West. COCOA TEA
11.03.2025 - WIR TRAUERN UM EINE LEGENDE



Colvin George Scott, alias Cocoa Tea, ist am Dienstag den 11. März im Alter von nur 65
Jahren in Fort Lauderdale (Florida / USA) verstorben.
Wie seine Frau Malvia Scott berichtete wurde schon 2019 bei Cocoa Tea ein Lymphom
diagnostiziert und in den letzten 6 Monaten hatte er zusätzlich mit einer Lungenent-
zündung zu kämpfen. Vor etwa drei Wochen wurde er zur Behandlung in ein Krankenhaus
eingeliefert. Nachdem sich Cocoa Tea übergeben musste wurde er zuletzt in eine Klinik
von Fort Lauderdale verlegt, wo er schließlich einem Herzstillstand erlag.
Cocoa Tea hinterlässt seine Frau Malvia und 8 Kinder, sowie einen Musikkatalog
mit einem über 40 Jahre langen Lebenswerk.

07.03.2025 - ONE PEOPLE - ALBUM RELEASE

The Human Rights have released their fourth album, "One People". The twelve tracks capture the evolution of the Canadian reggae collective and speak of the cycle of life, endings, and new beginnings. The album is dedicated to the memory of the band's keyboardist, Bernie Pitters, who passed away in 2023. His voice is featured at the beginning of the album, and it culminates with a farewell tribute song to him.

The band members themselves describe the work this way: “The Human Rights have grown from a band to a big family, and this is the first time we've really captured that. There's been more of a collaborative approach to songwriting. It's also the first time we've had Canadian reggae heavyweights David Jackson (keyboards) and Tony Barrett (guitar) on a record. In addition to his exceptional playing and singing, David has pushed us to elevate every aspect of this record, and Tony Barrett played what we already consider a classic solo on All Been There Before. Tom Richards (trombone) stepped up and brought the horn arrangements to a new level. Special guests Exco Levi, Kairo Mclean, I-Sax, and Rebecca Campbell brought their magic, and Lauren Barnett graced us with beautiful words and a powerful performance on Seeds We Sow". The album was recorded at Union Sound Company in Toronto and mixed by award winning Canadian reggae producers Dubmatix and Jeffry O'Luge Holdip. "Strength and Resilience" is Lutan Fyah’s seventeenth studio album and his second release with I Grade Records. Produced by Tippy I in collaboration with Zion I Kings, Moon, and Jah David, the album offers a rich and diverse sonic landscape that perfectly complements the Jamaican singer’s profound songwriting and masterful vocal delivery. Among the 13 songs, the title track is an anthemic reminder about the needed balance between firmness and flexibility, delivered over a classically rootsy Zion I Kings track laden with acoustic guitars and synthesizers.

"Leader Before Me" is a moving tribute to the King of Kings, Haile Selassie I, set to a lively and heavy one-drop riddim. Meanwhile, "Protect Your Energy" is a bouncy dancehall-inspired juggernaut of a song that addresses spiritual and emotional maintenance in trying times. "Strength and Resilience" also features notable collaborations with Akae Beka and Queen Omega, as well as a surprise guest feature with a special Spanish Town compatriot. Das neue Live-Album von Tiken Jah Fakoly heißt "Live Salle Pleyel". Es zeigt den Künstler und seine Musiker*innen auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Könnens. Besonders ihr erster Auftritt im legendären Salle Pleyel in Paris am 13. November 2024 hinterließ einen bleibenden Eindruck und verlieh seinen Songs eine völlig neue Dimension. Dabei schaffte die ivorische Reggaelegende eine magische Formel, die das akustische Arrangement mit traditionellen Instrumenten des üblichen Reggae-Rocks bricht.

Unter anderem erscheinen seine bekannten Songs "Plus rien ne m'étonne", "Tonton d’America" und "Africain à Paris" als eindrucksvolle, bewegende Live-Versionen auf dem Album. Tikens Texte scheinen geradezu zu atmen und die Stimmen von ihm und seinen Backgroundsänger*innen ziehen einen in einen unerlässlichen Bann. Bob Marley wäre heute 80 Jahre alt geworden. Was hätte er in all den Jahren nach dem 11.05.1981 noch alles schaffen und uns damit beglücken können? In Anbetracht seines beeindruckenden Lebenswerkes und die wenige Zeit die ihm dafür gegeben war, kann man sich das kaum vorstellen. Jedes Jahr feiern die Fans weltweit den Geburtstag des Königs des Reggae mit den verschiedensten Events. Besonders in Kingston gibt es wieder zahlreiche Veranstaltungen. Besonderen Stellenwert hat dabei natürlich die Marley Familie selbst und das Kingstoner Bob Marley Museum.

Wer den Live-Stream zur 80th Birthday Celebration verpasst hat, kann hier noch einmal in über 4 Stunden eine Zusammenfassung des Tages ansehen. Aber die Welt dreht sich natürlich nicht nur um Kingston. Immer wieder ehren zahlreiche Künstler weltweit den King mit unzähligen Neuveröffentlichungen oder eigenen Interpretationen seiner bis heute unvergesslichen musikalischen Schätze. Den 80. Geburtstag von Bob Marley hat auch die allseits bekannte amerikanische Band Stick Figure zum Anlass genommen, einen Song neu zu interpretieren. Diesen haben wir heute als Hörprobe ausgewählt. DYNAMITE SKAFESTIVAL
09.11.2024 - FELSENKELLER LEIPZIG

Und schon wieder geht eine Festivalsaison zu Ende. Zum Ausklang des Jahres trifft sich alljährlich die sächsische Ska-Gemeinde und wer sich darüber hinaus noch auf die Reise begeben möchte, im schönsten Ballsaal Leipzigs zum Dynamite Skafestival. In diesem Jahr gibt es zudem mit der 22. Ausgabe, eine Bierzahl zu feiern. Manche sagen zwar auch Schnapszahl dazu, aber diese gebrauchen wir erst ab drei gleiche Ziffern. ;-) Neben dem Ende Juni stattgefundenen This Ska in Rosslau, wir hatten darüber bereits berichtet, ist dies das zweitgrößte Event seiner Art in den östlichen Bundesländern und stellt für uns den letzten Festivalbesuch des Jahres dar. ZOE MAZAH

Zoe Mazah presents her fifth studio album, "Till Then". It includes ten songs and two dub versions with all shades of life and love as the central theme. A relaxed reggae referring to her love for the old school while embracing modern influences. From the one-drop hymn A Better Place, expressing the Liberian/German artist's feeling about the political stand of people in our society, to the bubbling Ska "So Alive", inviting the audience to dance the night away, Zoe Mazah's songs are authentic.

The album features outstanding collaborations, such as the international star Randy Valentine in "Tonight" and the two-time Grammy nominee and former singer of The Wailers Josh David in "Te Quiero, Te Amo", with the special flavor of a Cuban piano and a Spanish guitar. Die 60. Biennale vom 20. April bis 24. November 2024 kann ohne Übertreibung als Bahn und Bann brechend für Afrikanisches, Indigenes und anderes globales Kunstschaffen verstanden werden. Noch nie stand nicht-westliche Kunst so sehr im Mittelpunkt einer Biennale di Venezia. Wir wollen vor allem auf Afrika und ihre Diaspora fokussieren, was auch mit den Schwerpunkten von Reggaestory.de zusammenhängt. THE SLAPSTICKERS
04.10.2024 - SILVERBACK - ONLY VINYL RELEASE

Mal nicht aus Kingston, sondern aus Köln kommen fast 30 Jahre Erfahrung in Sachen Offbeat. Ihr satter Groove aus Two Tone, Ska und Dub braucht sich nicht vor den Größen zu verstecken, mit denen sie schon zusammen aufgetreten sind. Beim Album zum Bandjubiläum gehts Madness-mäßig zur Sache, die Toasters lassen grüßen und die Hotknives schauen auch mal rein. Kein Wunder, dass die Highlights ihrer Karriere so zahlreich sind wie die Stufen im Dom.

Der Titelsong lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass die Silberrücken vom Rhein “leader of the pack” sind. Immerhin gibts sie schon seit 1995 und sie mischen immer noch heftig mit, wie im Song “Riding” betont wird. “You Again” ist ein orgellastiger Ohrwurm und im Gegensatz zur Ex, auf die der Sänger in Zukunft verzichten will, wird man das Ding nicht mehr los. Bei “Viaje A Barcelona” kommt einem nicht nur die Gitarre spanisch vor – bei dieser Skafiesta gibts Shouting, bis die Kehle kratzt. “The System” packt die Posaune aufs Podium und holt sich nochmal Anregung bei Madness. Depeche Mode goes Offbeat mit “Enjoy The Silence” und huldigt den grandiosen Textzeilen des Songs. “Play It Safe” handelt nicht von Aids, sondern von der neuen Seuche HASS, die es gemeinsam zu bekämpfen gilt. Mit “Riding Dub” klingt das Album behutsam und verhal(l)ten aus. Also gebt dem Affen Zucker und euch den Skank, der die Socken qualmen lässt. Smith & Miller Records "SILVERBACK" ist hier erhältlich. Nagaï presents her new EP, "Back To My Roots". Eight songs in which the crystalline voice of the singer from Reunion shines on a sound ambiance as spiritual and serene as her message. In this work, stimulating rhythms and deep bass lines accompany meditative melodies and captivating vocal flights. Nagaï immerses us in a return to the essential, a journey towards oneself, which serves as a common thread throughout the EP.

Produced by Kaboum Music, the mix bears the undisputed mark of the Spanish world reference Roberto Sánchez. He also produced the two dub versions included in the EP. "Back To My Roots" is available on vinyl, CD and digitally. The music video for the eponymous song can be seen on YouTube. Nagaï will begin a French tour in April 2025, opening for Israel Vibration, then will hit the road again for a European summer tour during which she will present her new show, accompanied by her Reunion musicians . Ein paar Kilometer südöstlich der ehemaligen sächsischen Kurfürstenstadt Torgau, liegt das kleine Dorf Mehderitzsch mit reichlich 500 Seelen. Dies inmitten einer Feld- und Wiesenlandschaft und lockeren Waldbestand der Elbaue. Einmal im Jahr wird nun schon seit 2019 die dörfliche Ruhe mit den "Colors of Beat" erheblich aufgemischt. Die alteingesessenen und ruhebedürftigen Dorfbewohner werden aber kaum gestört, da sich die Festivalgemeinde im etwas entfernt liegenden Waldbad etabliert hat. >>> Mehr dazu

02.08.2024 - CELEBRATING JAMAICA 62 - ALBUM RELEASE

Am 06. August ist der "Jamaican Independence Day" an dem in diesem Jahr die 62jährige Unabhängigkeit gefeiert wird. Der legendäre Produzent Tad Dawkins nimmt dies zum Anlass ein Compilation-Album mit zahlreichen Artists auf Tad's Record zu veröffentlichen (siehe unten). Mit stattlichen 19 Tracks, was man nicht mehr alle Tage findet, kommt sicherlich jederman voll auf seine Kosten. Nach seinem 2020er "Nyabinghi Christmas" hat der allseits bekannte Saxophon-King Dean Fraser bei Tad's Record einen weiteren Longplayer für die Freunde seines Saxophons zusammengeblasen. Dieses Mal hat sich Dean in die Gefilde des Dub begeben, und wie nicht anders von ihm zu erwarten, Hervorragendes geleistet. THE MAGNETICS
18.07.2024 - SKANGRE LATINO - ALBUM RELEASE

Die im Jahr 2017 gegründete italienische Band The Magnetics, hierzulande zum Beispiel schon beim This Is Ska Festival in Rosslau und anderenorts, sowohl als eigenständiger Act oder auch als Backing Band für Dr. Ring Ding und Winston Francis, als Vertreter von Ska, Rocksteady und Early Reggae, mehrfach aufgetreten, kommt nun mit einem neuen Album im Latino Style um die Ecke. Das Album wurde weitestgehend in Spanisch mit ein bisschen Italienisch eingesungen. Nach dem Grund dieser Veröffentlichung gefragt, gibt die Band Folgendes an:

"Nach der großen Zuneigung, die wir in Mexiko und Spanien sowie in verschiedenen südamerikanischen Ländern erfahren haben, haben wir beschlossen, diese Zuneigung zu feiern, indem wir ein Album auf Spanisch und mit einer etwas lateinamerikanischeren musikalischen Ausrichtung als üblich machen. EINE ZEITREISE ZUM ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH FESTIVAL NACH SPANIEN

Einmal im Jahr wird eine Kleinstadt an der Costa del Azahar zur Welthauptstadt – zumindest der globalen Welt der Reggae Kultur. Vor genau dreißig Jahren schlug im Sommer 1994 die Geburtsstunde des mittlerweile weltweit größten Reggae Festivals. Nach mehreren Stationen in Italien versammeln sich nunmehr einmal jährlich rund 230.000 Musikfans in Benicàssim an der Küste zwischen Valencia und Barcelona – ideal für eine Urlaubs-Verlängerungswoche. "SKA... SKA... SKANDAL No. 7" ist die Jubiläumsausgabe dieser legendären Sampler-Reihe, die seit der Veröffentlichung der ersten SKA... SKA... SKANDAL-Ausgabe anno 1989 den Ska "Made in Germany" in der ganzen Welt bekannt gemacht und bei Generationen von Fans und Musikern als Initialzündung für Ihre Ska-Begeisterung gewirkt hat. PORK PIE feiert im Jahr 2024 sein 35. Chant Vibration presents their first album, "Keep Believing", the result of several years of work caught between collective studio sessions (arrangement) and live concerts. It is produced by One Love Records. Musically speaking is a mix of traditional reggae, from roots to dub, blended with blues and rock sounds. Keep Believing, as the band explains, is an album that exhort to stand firm, to strong ethics and solid points of reference, a very hard challenge nowadays, "We are forced to deal with a selfish and nihilistic society, where money and success are the only parameters worthy of consideration.

Like the tree that grows on the bank of a river, we will put down our roots and fight until good will prevails over evil. We cannot stand and watch, we need to act with faith, hope and love in our hearts". Der Beginn des heutigen Festivaltages ist für 14:30 Uhr angekündigt. Wir haben also noch viel Zeit den freien Vormittag mit einem Ausflug im Umfeld von Dessau auszufüllen. Jedes Mal, wenn wir hier aufschlagen, suchen wir uns ein anderes Ziel aus. Für unseren Ausflug sieht es ja wettertechnisch noch ganz gut aus, aber beim Mittagessen auf der Terrasse eines Lokals, müssen wir bei unserem letzten Happen unter einem Brauereischirm schon etwas zusammenrücken. In Vorbereitung des diesjährigen This Is Ska, schauten wir schon einige Tage auf die Wetterprognosen. Tag für Tag veränderten sich die Zeiträume an denen es regnen sollte. Irgendwann hatte ich die Nase voll und schaute mir das nicht mehr an. Man kann es sowieso nicht ändern und muss vorbereitet sein. Tatsächlich hatte es das Festival dann am Freitag erwischt und die Running Order musste wegen einer zeitweiligen Unterbrechung etwas umgestellt werden. Kürzlich hatten sich die legendären Congos im Rahmen einer umfangreichen Europatour mit den Gladiators zusammengetan und dabei 45 Shows, im Zeitraum 30. April bis 22. Juni, auf die Bühne gebracht. Die Tour begann und endete in Frankreich. Dazwischen ging es nach Spanien, Portugal, die Schweiz, Belgien, in die Niederlande, Österreich, Tschechien und für 3 Stationen auch nach Deutschland. Während bei den Gladiators mit Alan "Al" Griffiths schon die zweite Generation am Mikro steht, sind bei den Congos die Reihen des Gesangs-Quartetts zum Glück noch in alter Besetzung geschlossen. In 2022, Johnny Clarke entered Gaylard Bravo’s SmallWorld Studio to voice instrumentals recorded by Sly & Robbie for TABOU1 between 2011 and 2017. Johnny Clarke became successful when Robbie Shakespeare produced his hits for Bunny Lee in the 70s and it was fitting he would be reunited with musicians that helped jumpstart his fantastic career. On "Love Up", Johnny Clarke demonstrates he has lost none of his vocal abilities, effortlessly and beautifully voicing some of his old hits and covers, including Black Uhuru's "General", Bitty McLean's "As Far As Eye Can See", Jacob Miller's "Shaky Girl" and Johnny Osbourne's "Jah Promise".

His renditions of other artists' songs feel like they were made for him, sounding every bit as exceptional as the originals, while Sly & Robbie shine on these roots riddims, displaying their virtuosity and unique sound. Biggest selling reggae group, will release their muchawaited 21st studio album UB45 on 19 April 2024 via SRG Records (Universal). The 14-track album features brand new songs including forthcoming singles “Gimme Some Kinda Sign” and “Home”, plus rerecordings of some of the band’s most beloved hits. Over the course of 45 years, UB40 have garnered over 100 million album sales, 50 UK Top 40 singles and 10 UK Top 10 albums. The band has stood the test of time, touring the world together and recording music shot through with an unbreakable bond, fostered by their long-standing friendships and shared Birmingham roots.

The line-up proudly boasts all but one of the surviving founding members, now bolstered by the reinvigorating and reenergising presence of vocalist Matt Doyle. There are seven brand new UB40 recordings on this album, including forthcoming lead single “Gimme Some Kinda Sign”, a cover of Brenton Wood’s 1967 track “Gimme Little Sign”. The group added a special UB40 flavour to the legendary soul classic. It was chosen by Matt Doyle, who brought it to Robin Campbell, unaware that the song had been on the guitarist and vocalist’s wish list since the Labour Of Love (1983) days. Alle Jahre wieder, war die Reggaeville Easter Special Festival Tour, die beste Gelegenheit, sich auf die Festivalsaison des Jahres einzustimmen. Auch wenn dieses Festival nur einen Tag andauert und an verschiedenen Standorten stattfindet, gibt es immer eine gut gewählte Künstlerbesetzung. Im Vorfeld war leider noch eine Umbesetzung erforderlich, da ein Sänger von Dub Incorporation wegen Krankheit absagen musste. Die Band hat zwar nicht nur einen Sänger, wollte aber nur komplett auf Tour gehen. Als Ersatz wurde deshalb kurzfristig Dub FX engagiert. Somit waren leider alle gedruckten Poster und Flyer hinfällig geworden, soweit es zumindest der Teilnahme von Dub Inc betraf.  >>> Mehr dazu

Alborosie presents "Dub Pirate", released on his label evosound, as his seventh adventure in dub music. Alborosie showcases his production skills by remixing twelve songs from "Soul Pirate", his iconic 2006 album. Reworking classic tracks like "Kingston Town", "Still Blazing", "Rastafari Anthem" and "Herbalist", the Italian star, a resident in Jamaica since 2001, evokes the spirit of the Jamaican sound system with his mostly instrumental dub mixes defined by low seismic lines, ricocheting echo effects and clattering drum patterns.

"Soul Pirate" was Alborosie's first solo album. The album, which has accrued over 200 million Spotify plays, proved a springboard to greater success, winning the Best Reggae Act gong at the 2011 MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) awards; he was the first white artist to triumph in that category. To date, Alborosie has released fifteen albums, three of which made the Top 10 of Billboard’s Reggae Chart. "Chant Away" is the powerful debut album by the Italian reggae band De Strangers, out via La Tempesta Dub. Comprising ten original songs and a dub version by Paolo Baldini DubFiles, the album aims to be a manifesto of resistance and hope and to convey a message of struggle and rebellion. Recorded and self-produced by the band in their Studio La Sabbia, "Chant Away" is an emotional and spiritual experience that embodies the transformative power of reggae music.

The title itself is an invitation to free yourself through chant and rhythm and to challenge adversity with courage and determination. De Strangers want to underline the crucial role of music in counteracting the darkness that can cloud our existence. Elia Pozzi (vocals, drums) and Emiliano Vegro (keyboards), the operational core of the band, summarise the project: “In the life of each of us, challenges and difficulties shape our being. Every experience leaves an indelible mark, memories and emotions that accompany us wherever we go. It is this personal background that allows us to create authentic art and music". They add: "We worked on the lyrics and arrangements with engaging rhythms and melodies that try to capture the essence of life itself. Through this work we invite the listeners to reflect on their own experiences and to find the inner strength to face difficulties with confidence and strength of spirit". Deep research on sound, and the mix curated by Giovanni Doneda (electric bass) were fundamental to a journey filled with sonic variety, resulting in ten songs that explore the universe of reggae via its nuances. De Strangers, who also include Nicolas Biscione (electric guitar) and Alessandro Luppi (bass clarinet, saxophone), have expertly woven a musical plot that ranges from traditional roots reggae in songs such as "Rebel Healing" ft. Prince Alla, to lighter songs with major key harmonies inspired by the 70s and 80s. Along the way, they also ventured into reggae-dub territory with tracks such as "No Justice" ft. Galas and "Warriors" ft. Patois Brothers, enriched with synth bass and steppers rhythms, thus creating an engaging and dynamic listening experience. The dub version of the song "Rebel Healing", mixed by Paolo Baldini DubFiles, adds a further layer of depth and complexity to the album. The instrumental version and its sound manipulation transport the listener on a sensory journey, where time seems to dilate and every note becomes a mystical experience. The cover, designed by Nanà Dalla Porta, depicts a giant crossing wild lands and mountains, striding over rivers, contemplating starry skies and sunsets. This image symbolizes the journey of a band that wants to bring their music beyond geographical and cultural borders, uniting people. "Chant Away" is available on digital platforms and in CD format. "In The Shell" is the new album by Paolo Baldini DubFiles, the Italian producer's third solo work. Unlike previous albums where the focus was on post-production, in the Jamaican tradition of the dub school, this time the starting point of the beat-making is an original compositional work, 'a blank sheet of paper' on which to write and develop each track. The central nucleus of production and writing is therefore rooted in the construction, in studio, of the core instrumentals.

Only later did Baldini push himself outwards to forge collaborations with international artists such as Kabaka Pyramid, Anthony B, Queen Omega, Mellow Mood, Jules I, Supahfly, Lasai, Andrew I, Forelock, KG Man, Minori and Zacky Man. A common element in all the album’s tracks is the use of a series of ethnic sounds and samples, recorded and archived by Paolo Baldini during his numerous trips to Africa. There, he carried out electronic production and post-production work, the cornerstones of his aesthetic. The personal and emotional bond that led him to visit sub-Saharan Africa, and in particular Senegal, gave Baldini a privileged view of the daily contexts where he recorded the original samples. "In The Shell" celebrates this "hybrid" vision - between a 360° exploration of black music, through its electronic components, and beat-making started from the development of these samples. The two narrative strands of the album intertwine, mix and alternate, giving rise to the sonic and rhythmic patterns that are the true backbone of the album. The soundscape described in the album is a collage of images and colors, where past, present and future coexist and in which nature fits perfectly with scenarios taken from the cinematic imagery of science fiction. "In The Shell" is therefore a sort of map through which Paolo Baldini makes his journey as a producer, encountering many (if not all) of the declinations, made available by, but not exclusive to, Caribbean black music. This work arrives eight years after At Song Embassy, Papine, Kingston 6, an album/documentary recorded in Jamaica in 2015. In the meantime, Baldini was engaged in an intense tour which led him to perform throughout Europe, United States and Latin America. In this period, he has also worked as a producer for artists such as Mellow Mood, L.A.B., Forelock, Noiseshaper, Dubblestandart, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, Jovanotti, Vasco Brondi and historic reggae music labels such as Pressure Sounds and Echo Beach. SAMORY I & MORTIMER MEETS TIPPY I-GRADE

Samory I & Mortimer waren zusammen mit Tippy I-Grade, im März zu einer Europa Tour mit 18 Stationen unterwegs. Während sich Samory I schon seit 2016 auf den Bühnen Europas einen Namen gemacht hat, ist Mortimer als eine weitere neue Roots Hoffnung aus Jamaica, noch nicht ganz so viele Jahre in Europa unterwegs. Beide Artists haben es schon zweimal auf das Cover des Riddim Magazins geschafft. Samory I bereits in 2017 zum ersten Mal und Mortimer in 2020. Im Oktober 2023 landeten dann beide gemeinsam auf einem Cover. Rückblickend betrachtet, war das fast wie eine Prophezeiung für die in 2024 durchgeführte gemeinsame Tour. The film explores local peculiarities in the context of global sounds and worldviews. Seasoned roots artist Christos DC releases his new album "Kung Fu Action Theatre", a wholly instrumental project that fuses traditional Chinese instrumentation with roots reggae musical arrangements, released through his own label Honest Music. The Greek-American artist explains: "I chose to do this album as I was always a big fan of instrumental reggae and would collect these releases over the years for inspiration. Music has always been an integral part of my writing process. I began creating riddims long before I became a vocal artist.

Without vocals there is room to hear very subtle parts that would otherwise be obscured. It is a completely different process than applying words to a piece of music, the instruments are the message." Three Chinese instruments are used in "Kung Fu Action Theatre": the guzheng, the Chinese dulcimer, and the erhu. All of them fit perfectly with traditional reggae instruments and arrangements. The album's compositions, performances and production are top quality, with an abundance of inventive arrangements. Final mixing coming by Laurent "Tippy I" Alfred of Zion I Kings and I Grade Records, the album is absolute quality all round. About the Chinese influence, Christos says: "From my childhood I have always loved the music in Kung Fu movies. Throughout the years, this led to further interest and extended musical research into Chinese music. For many years now I have had the idea to create a project that merges these two styles together. The backdrop is 100% Reggae. However, the Chinese instruments blend very well in creating a new sound that is quite mysterious in nature." 25.02.2024 - WIR TRAUERN UM EINE LEGENDE

Am Sonntag den 25. Februar verstarb Peter Anthony Morgan, Sänger der Band Morgan Heritage, die 2016 für ihr Album "Strictly Roots" einen Grammy gewann. Links das offizielle Statement der Familie (Zum Lesen bitte anklicken). Wir sind entsetzt und unendlich traurig über diese unfassbare Nachricht. Wir sind mit unserer Trauer bei der Familie. Eine der größten Stimmen der jüngeren Reggaegeschichte ist von uns gegangen. Die Lücke, die der charismatische Sänger bei Morgan Heritage hinterlässt, wird kaum zu schließen sein. Mit seinen zahlreichen Hits, die er zusammen mit Morgan Heritage der Reggae-Welt geschenkt hat, hat er sich allerdings unsterblich gemacht und wird so niemals vergessen werden.

The band from Bordeaux, France, delivers since 15 years, a roots music which is flirting with soul, rock, hip-hop and dub. COVID crisis stopped their boost of creation launched in 2019, but 2024 will be the year of a fourth album studio, "RISE" Since 3 years, those sweet melodies and hopefull lyrics are in Marie’s head, who sings with a soulful voice and writes the texts. She’s doing it to free up herself and to speak against a stressfull world and obscurantism.

Led by a solar music between roots, soul and today, digital sounds, her words are claiming an ode to the nature which is inspiring herself. Nature is a cornerstone for ALAM who’s coming from the French Atlantic coast, and who’s driven by ocean strength that you’ll see in a lot of their videos and life. ALAM is a big family, a big friendship between musicians who are together for the love of music. Year after year, shows have been increasing, meetings too. Wir haben zwei Nachrichten, eine gute und eine schlechte. Welche wollt ihr zuerst hören? Fangen wir mit der guten Nachricht an. Pünktlich zum 30jährigen Bandjubiläum und 7 Jahre nach ihrem "Hooligans Of Love" veröffentlichen Yellow Umbrella mit "Yellow" und "Black" gleich zwei neue Alben. Vor ziemlich genau 30 Jahren (das erste Konzert fand am 22. Januar 1994 im Bärenzwinger Dresdens statt) zog ein wilder Haufen enthusiastischer und offbeatverliebter Musikerinnen und Musiker aus, um zunächst die Bühnen der Landeshauptstadt Sachsens, dann der Bundesrepublik und dann sogar Europas zu erobern. Von der Originalbesetzung ist heute niemand mehr dabei. Dienstältestes Bandmitglied (seit Mai 1995 dabei) ist Posaunist Thomas Hellmich. 30 Jahre harte Qualitätsarbeit im Reggae & Ska - Business müssen natürlich gebührend gefeiert werden. Dazu geht es am 26.01. in den Beatpol nach Dresden und am 27.01 nach Leipzig ins Werk 2. Der Beatpol ist schon seit Weihnachten hoffnungslos ausverkauft und in Leipzig sind wohl inzwischen auch die Tickets ausgegangen. Was will man mehr!

Und nun die schlechte Nachricht: Diese beiden Konzerte werden die letzten von Yellow Umbrella sein. Zumindest auf unbestimmte Zeit. Aber lassen wir die Band selber sprechen: "Wir sind extrem dankbar für 30 großartige Jahre voller Musik und Lebensfreude, die wir miteinander und mit Euch hatten. Es war uns ein Fest! Aber in der letzten Zeit haben wir gemerkt: Es geht so nicht weiter. Wir brauchen einfach eine Auszeit. Wir werden daher nach den beiden Konzerten im Januar 2024 eine kreative Pause von unbestimmter längerer Dauer einlegen. Der 26.01.2024 wird also auf jeden Fall ein unvergesslicher, sehr emotionaler, ziemlich einzigartiger und äußerst tanzbarer Abend werden. Mit unserem Veranstaltungstitel "Reggae Night" wollten wir wieder einmal einen Versuch starten, in die Reggae-Einöde von Ortrand und Umgebung ein wenig internationales Flair auf die Bühne des Ortrander Kulturbahnhofs zu bringen. Es war nicht der erste Versuch, aber wenn wir schon Sponsoring betreiben, warum dann nicht vor der eigenen Haustür die Kultur fördern. Mit Joseph Blue Grant und Teacha Dee hatten wir zwei gestandene jamaikanische Künstler ausgewählt, die sowohl Number 1 Hits, als auch Filmmusikbeteiligungen bei James Bond vorweisen können. Dennoch ist es uns trotz Buchung dieser hervorragenden Künstler nicht ausreichend gelungen, den wenig fruchtbaren Boden von Ortrand zu bestellen. >>> Mehr dazu

The 11th track set follows his collaborative album Black Gold in 2017 with Jamaican producerRory “Stonelove” Gilligan, which helped make Samory a household name in reggae. Over the past year, Samory I has teased us with singles from his forthcoming LP including “Blood In The Streets”, “Crown”, and “Wrath” featuring 2023 Grammy award winner Kabaka Pyramid and dancehall legend Capleton.

Strength is produced solely by prolific reggae producer Winta James who worked with Protoje, Chronixx, Damian Marley, and will also feature guest appearances by Jamaican reggae artists Lila Iké, Jesse Royal, and Mortimer. The tracks released thus far have garnered key radio play and global attention. Tastemakers like Sir David Rodigan of BBC1 have cited Samory I as one of only a small handful of current Jamaican artists carrying reggae forward at the moment. The singer is also currently gracing the cover of three European magazines – UK’s essential black monthly ECHOES, Germany’s reggae publication RIDDIM, and France’s quarterly REGGAE VIBES. As John Masouri from Echoes puts it,“Samory I is one of the most important artists of this present era. Protoje releases a new remix album "In Search Of Zion" via In.Digg.Nation Collective / RCA Records on all digital streaming platforms and special edition vinyl. The Jamaican artist and visionary tapped producer collective Zion I Kings to give a fresh, ambient and soulful twist to his critically acclaimed 2020 album "In Search of Lost Time". It is traditional meets modern roots reggae recreation. In addition, the LP features dub versions of each track. This reimagined LP is the final piece following his trilogy of time themed albums: "A Matter Of Time" (2018), "In Search of Lost Time" (2020) and "Third Time’s The Charm" (2022).

Protoje says “In Search Of Zion is my last gift before I go on to new music, so this is a closing chapter. This music is so different, some of them are steppaz, some one drops, some are boom bap, one-two…a throwback to a roots reggae time.” Zion I Kings is a team of three producers and labels – David "Jah David" Goldfine of Zion High Productions, Laurent "Tippy I" Alfred of I Grade Records and Andrew "Moon" Bain of Lustre Kings Productions – with a 50+ album catalog and 2x Best Reggae Album Grammy nominations for Snoop Lion in 2014 and Protoje in 2022. Laced with pounding kick drums, slapping snares, deep basslines, lush synthesizers and dub influences, their seasoned sound of live roots reggae instrumentation brought new dimensions to Protoje's lyrics and songwriting. Each of the three Zion I Kings producers oversaw production and mixing work on particular songs. As a result, the album presents the sonic signatures of the collective, but also the individual approaches for which each producer is known. The accompanying dub mixes allow each song's unique production approach to shine, with the traditional dub brushes of delays and reverbs working alongside more modern filtering and digital mixing techniques that bridge Jamaican dub mixing tradition with the currency of now. Alljährlich im Herbst trifft sich die sächsische Ska-Gemeinde und darüber hinaus, im schönsten Ballsaal Leipzigs zum Dynamite Skafestival. Dies Jahr inzwischen zur 21. Ausgabe. Neben dem jeweils Ende Juni stattfindenden This Ska in Rosslau, ist dies das zweitgrößte Event seiner Art in den östlichen Bundesländern. Bei uns ist es inzwischen seit einigen Jahren zur Angewohnheit geworden, dieses wohl terminlich letzte Festival des Jahres mitzunehmen. Schwerpunkte des heutigen Festivals sind Roy Ellis, The Valkyrians und die Ska Ska Skandal Revue. 13.10.2023 - THE LOUDER THE BETTER - ALBUM RELEASE

Soom T presents her sixth studio album, "The Louder The Better". It is a combination of live band studio recordings and digital productions. Entirely self-produced with her own music label Renegade Masters and with Kunta as executive producer, the album has taken three years to be realized since the first recordings in Brazil during the pandemic. It is a choral work, with songs composed by the French maestro Tom Fire, the American Terry Vibes, the producer Kunta himself together with Green Teddy or the French label and production studio Irie Ites.

Some are the result of live sessions with the band in Sao Paulo, Brazil, (at Pangea Studios) under the direction of Mauro Rabello, while others have been produced with more digital methods by Dr. Bud in France and by Christian Cowlin, the live sound engineer for The Wailers. Many of the instruments on these songs were played by Cowlin himself, among other seasoned musicians, including the legendary British drum & bass duo Mafia & Fluxy, and finally recorded at his studio in the UK. The album is a melting pot of sounds, influences and roots and is full of melodies and vocals with a lot of prominence. Within a crossroads of genres, led by Jamaican roots and digital music, we find more traditional songs with some really attractive harmonies that remind us of a bygone era. The Glasgow artist transmits a strong but positive and inspiring message. With this new album, Soom T sticks to what is closest to her heart to address multiple issues that concern her, from the corrupt state of the world, to the emptiness of politics and the urgent need to awaken to the reality of the condition of society. Skarra Mucci presents his new album, "Perfect Timing", an ode to reggae of all eras, full of nods to the sound system culture. From the choice of the featurings to that of the beats created by Undisputed Records, nothing is left to chance in this eighth studio work by the Jamaican artist living in Barcelona, which offers a journey through the highlights of this rich culture which has never ceased to evolve. "Perfect Timing" features notable collaborations: Yannis Odua on Roots Rock Reggae, the first single from the LP; L’Entourloop in the powerful Street Dance; or the Jamaican legend Johnny Osbourne in a version of his 80s classic What A La La, performed by French riddim maker Manudigital.

The album opens with Here I Come, a hybrid roots-tinged hip-hop riddim; brass and percussion resonate throughout the track as Skarra Mucci gives way to a mesmerizing voice sample that gives the track all its depth. The exploration of various styles and influences continues with the very groovy Dancehall, produced by the Dub Akom band. Nach einem Tag Akklimatisierung in Addis Ababa starten wir heute in den Süden. Man könnte dazu von Addis bis Arba Minch fliegen oder übers Land fahren wie wir das tun. Auf halber Strecke wollen wir in Shashemene pausieren. Heute wollen wir uns zirka 120 km von unserem jetzigen Standort in Addis Ababa nach Norden begeben. Wir werden am Ziel unseres Ausfluges das größte Kloster Äthiopiens besuchen. Man kann sich dabei kaum verfahren, da sich der größte Teil der Strecke auf einer gut ausgebauten Straße mit der Bezeichnung A3 abspielt. Lediglich die letzten drei Kilometer biegt man nach rechts auf eine untergeordnete Straße ab, die aber ebenfalls sehr gut befahrbar ist. Wem das als Tagesausflug von Addis Ababa dennoch zu weit ist, kann auch nahezu vor Ort, im Ethio German Park mit grandioser Aussicht übernachten. >>> mehr dazu

Mit diesem Beitrag schließen wir an die bereits dokumentierte  15-tägige Äthiopien-Reise aus dem Jahr 2013 an. Auf einem Rückflug von Zanzibar nach Deutschland mit der Ethiopian Airlines, ist in Addis Ababa zwangsläufig Zwischenstation. Nach unserer Begeisterung für Äthiopien im letzten Jahr, war es einfach nicht über´s Herz zu bringen, Addis nur aus der Flughafenperspektive zu sehen. Die Stadt hat noch so einiges zu bieten, was wir beim letzten Mal noch nicht gesehen haben. Also haben wir ein neues Visum bei der Botschaft beantragt und unseren lieb gewonnenen einheimischen Reiseleiter Henok reaktiviert. >>> mehr dazu

Die heutige Faulenzerei lockern wir am Morgen wieder mit einem ausgedehnten Strandspaziergang auf. Früh ist es immer am schönsten, da ist noch nicht so viel Trubel, und die Temperaturen halten sich auch noch in Grenzen. Dafür ist die Tierwelt umso reger und man kann im flachen, kristallklaren Wasser, immer wieder allerhand Bewegung feststellen.  mehr
